Frost outside, dry central-heating air indoors and constant swings in temperature – in winter, skin loses moisture faster than it can replenish it. The result is that tight feeling after cleansing, flakiness, redness and fine lines that look more pronounced than in summer. Japanese skincare rests on a simple principle: never cleanse harshly, build hydration up in layers and reinforce the protective barrier with nourishment.

Why skin dries out in winter
The outermost layer of the skin acts as a barrier that keeps moisture in. Cold constricts blood vessels and slows sebum production, while dry air from the heating draws moisture from the surface. The barrier weakens, water evaporates faster and the skin becomes more prone to irritation. That is why simply switching to a “thicker cream” isn’t enough in winter – the whole routine needs adjusting.
1. Gentle cleansing without that tight feeling
If your skin feels tight after washing, your cleanser is too strong for winter. Choose a gentle foam or emulsion that removes impurities without disrupting the protective layer. Hyalogy Creamy Wash contains coconut oil derivatives and is designed specifically for dry and sensitive skin. Use lukewarm rather than hot water.
2. Hydration in layers
Rather than one heavy cream, skin absorbs several thin layers far better. Straight after cleansing, apply a lotion – such as Hyalogy P-effect Refining Lotion – pressing it gently into the skin with your palms, and repeat if your skin is very dry. Then follow with a hydrating gel, for example Hyalogy P-effect Reliance Gel with hyaluronic acid.
3. A nourishing cream as a protective layer
The final layer is there to “lock in” hydration. In winter, reach for a richer texture: Hyalogy P-effect Nourishing Cream is made for dry and sensitive skin, while Hyalogy Platinum Face Cream suits mature skin in need of antioxidant protection. Apply your cream at least 20 minutes before heading out into the cold.
4. A mask once a week
A mask gives skin an intensive boost of hydration and nourishment that an everyday routine can’t quite deliver. Treat yourself in the evening after cleansing – try Hyalogy BW Intense Mask – then continue with your lotion and cream.
5. Don’t forget your lips, neck and hands
Lips have no sebaceous glands, so they are the first to crack – a restorative lip cream will help. In winter the neck and décolletage are just as exposed to the cold as the face, yet they are often left unprotected; include them when applying your cream or use a dedicated neck and décolletage serum. For dry skin on the body and hands, try Hyalogy Body Treatment Cream.
Extra winter tips
- Air your home in short bursts and keep humidity at around 40–60%.
- Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty in winter.
- Don’t skip sun protection in winter either, especially in the mountains.
- If your skin stings and stays red for a long time, consult a beauty therapist or dermatologist.
